we got up early, in order to head out on the road as soon as possible. i preordered us some coffees from a place on the way out of town. the coffee was STRONG.
we left Santa Fe and headed northish and the eastish.
google maps put us on the slowest possible route. at one point we hit a one way road on a major highway. there were trucks backed up a mile or so. we sat and sat and sat.
i have no idea what google maps was thinking, but it kept putting us on highway 50. we drove through NE New Mexico and into NW Oklahoma before coming out into SW Kansas and then straight across Kansas on HW 50, which is about as rural as you can get.
When we got near Wichita I thought for sure we'd jump on the highway, and briefly we did, before jumping back on HW 50 and took this shitty little road all the way to Emporia, where I finally said fuck this shit and jumped on I35. The state of Kansas was full of smoke, and along the highway were fires everywhere. At one point 3 firetrucks were trying to put one of them out. But in every direction, there was smoke. Regardless, we arrived in KC almost 20 minutes faster than google maps wanted us to come home.
we went to the tower for dinner and are now at home
