we didnt get up super early, but early enough, and wandered a bit through Rethymno looking for coffee and food before backing up everything and heading out.
We first headed West to Chania and then south to Sougia. I had been reading about all the aweful rains they had had this spring, but it looked like they were doing a pretty good job of making the roads driveable, though there were many spots where you could see where the road had been washed out completely and covered in gravel. There were also many road crews out working, the island depends on getting around, both for the citizens and the tourists. I knew we had some free time, so decided to make a pit stop in Omalos to see the trail head of the Samaria Gorge. It was a gorgeous morning and the view was spectacular.
From there it was a short drive on very winding roads down to the beautiful village of Sougia. We chose a different hotel to stay in this time, not too pleased with the one we stayed in before, this one called the Oceania. They didn't have 2 rooms when I booked it, but had a two bedroom apartment in the back, which means we were roomates for the evening. We loaded into the room and then had a lovely lunch on the beachside cafe. We were then planning on splitting up, C&H to the beach, and JW and I on a hike to Lissos, but apparently i had broken the lock on our room, and we couldn't get in. the Manager, a lovely man named George told us, we do not lock doors in Sougia, and well, now we know. It took all of an hour to drill out the old lock and get us into our room, delaying the hiking and beaching, but eventually everything worked out.
JW and I headed down the road to where the trailhead to Lissos was. We had gone to Lissos back 2015, but were in no shape to hike after doing the Samaria Gorge the day before, so we took a boat, and walked around the site. We say people way up on the cliffs who were hiking down and regretted not coming in that way. So away we went, up some stairs and then following a dry creekbed for a while. Then a series of switchbacks got us on top of a small plateau between the two gorges. The top was covered in these shrubby little bushes, and the ground was an unearthly orange, which made it look like were were walking on a foreign planet. We finally arrived at the other side and looked down on the ancient city of Lissos. By now it was getting late, and we were both tired as hell, so we called it a day and hiked back to town.
Once we arrived we saw C&H out on the beach and told them we were going to shower and get ready for dinner. Shortly after they joined us and we went to the wonderful place we went to the last time we were here. It was a wonderful meal, and a sweet acordian player was playing cover songs. After dinner we all walked down the beach, had some drinks and then hit the hay.
