today start for shit.
Our boat was supposed to leave at 6 am so we got up at 5 am and rushed to pack up and roll everything over to the port.
There was no one there. At a quarter to six.
Shit.
We thought maybe we were at the wrong port.
We rolled our shit over to where we saw a very large boat docked, but this was not our boat.
A man came out, HEY he said, and I said, where is the boat?
He said boat comes in at 7:15.
Shit.
So we rolled our shit back to the hotel and layer in the lobby for an hour before rolling it back to the dock where many people were boarding our boat. Not the huge boat we came in on, but a very big boat, mostly empty, and very large
The trip to Chios was 2 hours so we dozed a bit, I walked around, and then dozed a bit, and before we knew it, she arrived in Chios
The car rental place was opposite where we came off the boat so we grabbed our rental car and drove down 1/2 a block to the Aegean Sea hotel. The man was waiting fo us and we checked into the hotel, but our room was not ready but we were ready so we hopped in the car and took off towards Northern Chios, except we forgot the phone charger and then got desperately lost in the back alleys of Chios trying to get back to the hotel to retrieve them. We did make it though, and shortly were on the coastal road behind a truck going 40 kmp
After a few and I mean many turns, we finally had a few feet to pass the truck and make our way along to the coast. We had no particular plan other than explore norther Chios. This worked out great, because everything in northern Chios was closed. Every town we drove through was completely shut down, we saw no people, no cars. The sharp jagged hair pin turns were effortless without a single car coming the other way. The scenery was breathtaking the roads were tiny and frightening. This is what I’ve been training for my entire life. I really wish i could share it with you, but my hands are too cramped from clutching the steering wheel to take many pictures, though here are a few
We were starving at this point and having past through every northern town with nothing opened, we simply drove back to Chios Town and went to a lovely taverna for lunch.
After lunch we headed to the deserted medieval town of Anavatos. This road was also twisty and winding and batshit crazy, and finally we turned down a road towards Anavatos. We crept down a creepy hill and finally saw it off in the distance. JW said, that doesn’t look real, it looks like a painting. It was fucking crazy, this stone town built on top of a mountain top. We finally reached the top and parked the car and started hiking up the trail. The anticipation was thick and as we finally reached the top the gate was closed and a large sign said closed for repairs.
Fuck.
We are having the worst luck with castles and the like on this trip, so going forward, we are skipping every single castle that we might run across. Fuck all the castles and burn them to the ground with dragons.
We headed back up the hill towards the road and made our way east towards the other side of the island. We saw our first signs of beaches and way off in the distance a castle, but we had already cursed all castles for eternity. Drove past another medical city, nope, and headed back to Chios where we came through a narrow as shit road, that had semi trucks coming the other way. I looked back in my mirror and saw a taxi cab speeding towards us. The speed limit was 30 and nobody was even close to that. At a chockhold in the road, a truck coming the other way refused to give the right of way, causing me to come to a screeching halt. The truck kept coming without fear of consequences, and me in my shiny rental car had to make a fast decision. Put the car in reverse and try to avoid the oncoming disaster. Which then lead to disaster, becaause the taxi, no on my ass, was not trying to avoid the truck, he was simply stationary 2 feet behind my car. Needless to say, i hit his taxi and there was minor damage, and insurance people and the police all showed up, but we have insurance and are not worried and 1/2 an hour later, we are all on our way. That was fucking brutal.
Jw and i headed back to the hotel and hit up a bar on the edge of harbor for drinks. The weather turned fridges and we spilled some ouzo on the table and ran back to the hotel to get warmer cloths. Then we went to a super casual taverna for a light supper and back to the room to type nonsense to my mom.
Hi mom.
Aw. Adventures. Is everything closed because tourist season hasn’t started yet?
