Steely Dan and a Quesadilla

Today we said goodbye to Crete in the best way possible.  We got up a bit late, got a coffee and checked out the breakfast bar at the El Greco Hotel, and headed out on the highway towards Heraklion.

It didnt take long, we did stop to get some gas, and when we arrived, the Marin Dream on her impossible to park corner lot with no parking for miles awaited us.  I went around the block, came at her from the rear, and slid in next to the door while I unloaded the bags and 35 cars waited to get around us.  I left JW behind as I negotiatied the tiny tiny streets around the hotel, eventually missing a turn and coming up to the main drag where there were hundreds of people streaming through it.  This was definitely the the busiest year we”eve ever seen in Crete, I can only imagine what Athens will be like tomorrow.

I beeped and inched forward and made my way through the crowd and zipped around the port square and back to the hotel where I managed to find the tiny road to the parking garage.  Got my slip and walked back to the hotel.  Our room was on the seaside as always, I think we”ve stayed at the Marin 4 other times before, last trip it was closed for renovations.

We got our shit in the room and took a walk straight to the museum so that I could get pictures of all of the Minoan Art pieces my last three tattoos were based on.  I am putting them here for your consideration.

It was actually free day at the museum so we didnt think there was any reason to hang out, we”ve been there 3 other times, so we then walked to the wine shop to see if they had any good retsina, I got a bottle and we then wandered the streets of Heraklion and finally picked a really decent place to eat, that had some amazing food.

After lunch we walked to the lions square and hat some coffee and bougatsa along with all the Greeks and tourists, a very famous place that we”ve been to before and it was marvelous.

By now on the trip we would be driving somewhere I would be talking to JW and she would be fast asleep.  Because we”re not driving we headed to the room where we both took little naps.  It was pleasant.

When we woke up it was still a bit early so we waited to America to wake up and see what they had to say about the day before.  I also played a little game I like to call, doomscroll instagram, which is a lot of fun.

What a boring day for you to be reading this, I’m terribly sorry.

We cleaned up and headed out for dinner.  We decided to avoid the harbor restaurants we’ve been eating at for years and I picked out a lovely farm to table place not far away that looked pretty good.  We arrived and I’m not kidding you, the place was nearly empty, and the door guy said, we”re completely booked up.  Now lets be clear, most Greeks eat dinner at 10 or so, and it was currently 7 pm.  We knew the guy was full of shit.  I told him we”d be in and out in an hour, and he told us, no luck, so fuck that guy.  We walked a block to the other side of a beautiful park and went to a greek/Mexican place, which was pretty good. Apparently the owner lived in Houston for while.  JW had the cheese plate and I had a quesadilla and margarita, which I told her, was pretty terrible.  Honestly is my worst trait.

After we said goodbye to George the waiter and Amalia, we walked around a bit more and just happened to see a beer sign for the Solo beer I had for lunch.  The door was open, so we peaked our head in and asked if they were in fact open, but one of the ladies sitting at the table said they were closed and not open until tomorrow.  Suddenly a man emerged from the back and said what do you want, and JW said, we like this beer you sell, so he poured us both a glass no charge and that was that.  It was really good, free,, Greek hospitality.  I told him I’d tell my friends, so here you go.

We got back to the hotel and now I’m writing this.  In the morning we will say goodbye to our beloved Crete, which is like no place YOU have ever been and heading to Athens which is a big marvelous city full of a million people.  We have no plans, so we”ll see what happens.  JWs brother and his family will be arriving tomorrow as well, and well be spending Saturday morning with them, so that should be a hoot.

A hoot.
