Everything comes together

Last day in Greece, finally getting over jet lag, finally sleeping a good 7 hours every night, finally getting acclimated and now we have to go.  Shit.

We got up pretty early, hopping on the metro down to the port to take a boat to Aegina for the day.  We’ve been told horror stories of the metro, but i can tell you, it was a breeze, it cost  dollar to take the metro, and 35 dollars total take a cab.  No brainer.

The metro was slick, we hopped off and the port is crazy, everybody getting on boats, we found ours eventually and off we were to Aegina (which rhymes with EGG and not Vagina)

When we arrive, very short and choppy trip, there was supposed to be someone meet us at the port with a sign, but they were nowhere to be seen.  We wandered around, and i saw a sign for Avance on a van, so we walked over there and there was a lady standing with a clipboard, which is the universal car rental person sign.  She mistook us for someone else and had no idea who we were, but after walking with her to her office, everything was straightened out and before long we were headed out on the terrible roads of Aegina.
Side Note, Aegina has the worst roads of any island we have ever been on and it’s not even close.  At one point on an isolated mountain road, it looked worse than the road to Balos.  Terrible.

So i had a few things to do on the island they were 1. Drive around the island and 2. Go to a couple solo sites.

One of the cool sites on the map was listed as ancient Aegean.  Well i can tell you kids, this was another one of those terrible ideas, where we walked in circles around and up the side of a mountain and all we saw were churches.  I’m pretty sure there were over 20, and we were not alone.  Pilgrims of Jesus were also wandering around this mountain, but we were the only ones who made it all the way to the top, thinking, by chance there was another path down.  To our dismay, we had to wind our way backwards to get back off this magic mountain.  It was terrible and i cannot apologize to JW enough for such a horrible idea that we had.

When we got to the bottom we both needed to pee, so took care of that and headed to the next stop, a temple of some sort, and low and behold, this was a real place, with a parking lot and everything.  Considering we skipped the Parthenon this year, this little guy more than made up for it.

It was still early, so my next was lunch, I’ve already shortened the day, but as we’re heading around the southern end of the island, the roads just get worse and worse.  At one point there was a car in front of us going 10.  It was the only car we saw on this road, and they lived here.
Terrible.
We passed through the town i wanted to eat in and the place i had picked out was closed, so we just kept on moving and the road just kept getting worse and worse.  I reminded JW that we didn’t have a spare in the car, so if we popped a tired we were fucked.
Eventually we came to another village with a taverna open, but it was not near the sea, so we kept on going before long we were back on the northern part of the island, and i made another judgement called to go along the northern edge to a little beach town with a taverna that looked ok.
Just ok.
But when we got there, we saw they had a Tassos, which is the place we eat at in KC, and it was decided.

Tassos on the beach of Aegina was delightful, under a tree with cats that showed up when my 45 dollar fish arrived.  They were delightful and it was another memorable and wonderful lunch.

It was only 2, and i have no idea what we’re going to do, so we drove back to the main town and turned in our car.  We walked around the town looking at all the tourist shops interspersed with home goods stores.  It was like, tourist craps, and weed eaters and shovels.  This island is weird.

We sat around waiting for the boat to arrive at 3:30 and got in it and back to Port.  From there a hop skip and a jump back on the metro and we were back in Athens.

We got some soap at the soap store, went back to the room to pack and finished the evening off with dinner at the Rooster, and drinks on the Attalos rooftop bar.

You will not hear from me again for a while, we leave for the airport at 3:30.
