Got up after a rough night of sleep, having issues with my CPAP, JW has bug bites, all in all we woke up fine and then the power went out. We packed up everything and headed down to the breakfast bar to see a bunch of people waiting for coffees that would never show up. We both grabbed a quick bite and then off on the road again towards Lefkada, stopping in the next village over for coffee of course.
I had a few ancient sites on my list of places to go and we were supposed to meet the boat people at 3, which even now sounded like a pipe dream. We’re almost out of 5G from T-Mobile so I tried to navigate the day without GPS. We headed south and was on the lookout for brown signs.
The first brown sign was the theater of Cassope. This was the first on the list, so of course we got off the highway and headed up up up into the mountains. I really had no idea what to expect but when we got there it was a sprawling city across the side of a mountain and the theater was way at the backend. I told JW no more hike to castles this trip, but I didn’t say anything about theaters. The entire site was really well preserved, there were in fact 2 theaters a baby one and the big one, and there were lots of walls and roads and buildings that gave you some imagination for what the place actually looked like in 3BC.
I realized when we got back on the road that we would not have time for the other two sites I wanted to see and get to the place I wanted to go to lunch by 1ish. So we drove through Prevenza, which is a fairly large size town and down into an underwater tunnel which was pretty neat and then immediately missed the exit for Lefkada so down the road another 10k before we could turn around and get back on track.
Before we knew it we were driving across the land bridge to Lefkada, the only island you can drive to in Greece. It is a giant mountain surrounded by beaches and villages and it looks pretty rad. We immediately sped through town and got on the road to the mountain village of Karya which boasted two places in my top 5 on the island so it was a choice between Foolish Goat or Pueblo.
We parked the car and walked into the village and To Pardalo Katsiki or foolish goat was the first one in the main square so it won by default. We sat down in the square under the awning of 5 enormous trees and had a delightful lunch of roasted goat and Greek salad.
After lunch we continued south through the mountains thinking maybe we could reach the light house on the southern tip, but I realized how slow we were going and just it across the village of Vasiliki and headed north towards Nydri. This road was much quicker than the windy one through the mountains and before long we were headed down down down towards Nydri. Our hotel was on the southern end of the main strip and very easy to find. We parked the car and checked into to our spacious and I mean HUGE room for 85 EU a night. This thing was 4 times the size of the room Corfu easily.
After getting situated it was now close to five, and we missed our appointment with the boat people, but decided to walk down there anyways and see what we could see. The waterfront was lined with boats and restaurants so we should have no problem finding a good place to eat with a spectacular view. When we got to the place on the dock where it should be, there were boats with the name of the company on it and a lady who we found out was waiting for one of their boats to arrive, but not us in particular, so we checked out our boat for tomorrow morning and I even got to take it for a little spin around the harbor to test my boat driving skills. (No picture from JW!)
Everything’s falling into place and now it’s nap time until dinner.
