Today was a day like any other, wake up, eat something get in a car drive very fast get somewhere take a picture get back in th car and drive very fast stop for a salad and a cheap ass beer.
It’s that time of the trip, with 1 full day left that we start getting mad, at each other, at the trip itself, we are not fully rested, we are not ready to return, there is so much left uncovered in this land of adventure 1\2 way around the world, and the realization that soon and abruptly it will come to an end is not sitting in our craws very well at all.
we did finally get to try the breakfast room of the new boutique hotel and it was fine, I suppose. Then we loaded up the car and headed out on the super expressway, towards the airport, where we would have to go to get our COVID test in order to travel home through Germany.
We got a little lost as I saw a sign for Athens and took it not realizing it was down through the heart of Athens, traffic and all, when in reality I wanted to stay on the super expressway all the way around the congestion, it honestly took us 1/2 an hour out of our way, but if that was an adventure
When we parked the car and got into line to get our per test, it was evident that the people in the quick test line were complete and utter idiots, standing on top of each other, pushing it other, cutting in line and acting like total fools. At one point a young black lady turned to the older man literally on top of her and said back the fuck up. I was so ready for this, but ultimately nothing came of it, and the giant circuses on the floor that said maintain social disctancing were 100# and completely ignored.
Our line went quickly and we got out of there lickity split and south on the highway towards the cape of sounion hoe of the temple of Poseidon one of the most famous in all of Greece. Before venturing out we fixed the single mistake we had made when we visited in 2013, which was having a terrible lunch of terrible piazza that day. On this day we went on the beach below the temple and had a very healthy salad and little fishes for lunch and they were delicious.
After lunch we headed up the hill and walked up to the ticket booth and holy Christ did they Jack up the prizes for this one, 10 bucks each and maybe 10 minutes of looking at the thing and going neat. Ok maybe 20 minutes, but I loved it and all just not 10 dollars worth.
Needless to say, we loved that shit as 10 dollars worth as we could before headed back on the road and driving the opposite way around the cape towards Athens. It was a slow and painful drive with many gorgeous beaches, and lots of traffic jams. It looked like everyone had taken off work today to go to the beach, maybe? The beaches south of Athens also have rail line that goes out there so they are very popular with the locals.
After many delays we finally wipped out the gps and found the hotel and of course no place to park in front so double park, get the shit out of the trunk, hope back in to take it to the rental place and hit a traffic jam that probably took 1/2 an hour to go 12 blocks it was maddening. I tell you.
Got the car dropped off and headed back to the hotel where we had our ritual drink on the rooftop before eventually heading out for dinner at the .Rooster, one of our favorites.
Very tired now, probably cutting this short. One last full day left George.
Roooster!
