Today started off very early, as we both woke up 4:30 wide awake. Hello jet lag. So with nothing much to do, we didn’t;t do a whole lot of anything. Waited around for George to show up at 9:30 and away we drove up to the north of the Akrotiri Penensela where we did another come back adventure from 2019, where we hiked down to the bear cave and turned around and that was that, not fully realizing there was so much more further down the trail. George also promised us caves, which JW was a tad optimist about, and George put us all at ease with his assurances.
The trail starts at the top of a gorge, but instead of riding inside the gorge, it rides the edge of one side, down down down, maintained by the Monestery and MOnks, according to George the government pays them for this because it is a huge tourist attraction. At first the trail is long series of steps, that gradually get closer and closer until you’re going down quickly. After the bear cave, it dramatically goes down and in a series of switchbacks reaches the monestery of Kotholiko, which they call the mad monks or something, it was quite impressive and miles away from the top. And from the sea.
After we perused the site, we headed down to another connecting gorge where George showed up the first of the 2 caves we would explore. It was super humid inside and my flashlight kept going off, boo. Julia went in and all the way to the back and was a super trooper.
From cave #1 we hiked down the gorge all the way to the sea, we we found a curious site, Soft stone that had been cut out to build all of the churches and bridges were cut out from/this area, it was pretty darn cool.
We had a brief siesta and then headed back up to monestery where George and I attempted Cave #2, but my light kept going out and I started getting we out of breath and sweating profusely and I just told George we had to keep moving.
It took a while to hike back up the path, and then we made the call to head over to Stavros Beach for a beer. Stavros Beach was the site where Zorba the Greek was filmed. It resembles doing of the sort today, but oh well.
We took George back to the hotel and said goodbye to him until we meet again. He really taught us a ton and we re lucky to be friends with him.
After the adventure we just layered around until dinner and then after dinner walked about the sea wall to the Venetian light house.
After this we had one final drink at the Porto and called it a NIGHT>
