Another shitty night of no sleep, I feel like tonight we’ll get. Handle on it.
I took a walk to stretch my legs while JW had some breakfast, when I returned I had my final meal at the Porto, it was a sad occasion indeed.
We got the car packed up and said goodbye, and headed out on the road. Briefly stopped off at the parking lot for the city market, but it was blocked by a truck unloading goods and there was a line of cars behind us. The truck driver taunted me into going around him, and I took the challenge much to JWs chagrin, and to both our surprises, I made it past the truck on onto freedom. It wasn’t long after we were on the national road and then south into the mountains of western Crete.
ItS always a trip to drive on the winding roads of Crete, at one poin today we realized we were on the very same road we were on when we had a crazy over the mountain experience from 2015. We had a chuckle at that one. Before long however we were in gorgeous Paleochora, a quaint seaside village in the SW corner of the islands. We explored, had some lunch and then headed out.
We got immediately lost leaving the town even though there was only 2 roads leaving it, and I was quite amazed at our good luck that we had chanced upon one of the scariest roads in the entire world. Not only that, but I had actually researched this road back in 2015 for our first trip to wester Crete, and remarked to Julia that this looked an awful look like the crazy mountain road I’d reaserched, and there should be a few dogs tied to the road coming up, and low and behold, we damage around the corner and there they were. Now to say this road was frightening was perhaps an over statement, one car wide, cliff side on the left, cliff side on the right, no guard rails of any kind to be seen. 5 feet in front of your bumper is a good place to look and after every switchback, close your eyes
Eventually this road lead us to one of the biggest questions that I have had since our second trip to Greece, and that question is, where the fuck is ancient Elyros. Unfortunately for us, that question was NOT ancswered today, even though we found a very lovely sign broadcasting the important event of this ancient site. We scoured a oil tree grove covered hillside for the better part of an hour, and found diddly squat. So sorry my friends, we are so sorry.
Luckily this setback was only fleeting, and we scurried down the hill and were in Sougia our final destination before you knoew it. It was a ghost town to say the least. We home the people will come. Seriously and hardcover we do. We found out the gorge is still closed, the bus is not running and it will be 30 bucks to take a taxi up the mt to do the other gorge. Ugh.s
Took a little nap, had some fantastic dinner. Went to bloody bed.
