day 16 - mavros gatos

the hotel we're staying at is really pretty nice and a hell of a lot better than the place we stayed at in 2013.  all in all, i can say we've only stayed in 1 or 2 truly awful hotels, and most of them are actually pretty fantastic.

after a light breakfast, we, you guessed it, jumped in the car and headed north towards the ancient city of Myceane.  This was the home to the famous Agememnon, of which our hotel is named after, and also the famous lions gate, which has stood on this hilltop enthralling tourists for hundreds of years.  the cyclopean walls, the giant tholos tombs, and I finally got to venture down into the cistern, which was absolutely filled with a swarm of mosquittos.  HELL NO!  After a quick jaunt around the hilltop, and then down through the museum, we hopped down to the giant Tholos Tomb nearby, and then back in the car.

A short ways away was the ancient city of Tyrins, which was gorgeous, and we pretty much had it to ourselves.  It was a bit hot and everyone was a bit ragged at this point, so we quickly roamed through it, and high-tailed it back to Napflion.

Once there, poor H needed a break, which C & JW and I went up to the Palimides Castles that overlooks the city.  Unfortunately for us, it was literally swarming with children, on field trips from school I assume, and it was absolutely dreadful.  We tried to hike around them, and made our way to a remote and deserted part of the fortress before calling it a day.

Back down to the city, to walk around, and guess what, the children were now down here.  they were everywhere!  We decided to instead walk around the city on special path that lead to a special beach.  It was special.

Eventually we regrouped a tried a different spot for dinner, this one suggested by Matt Barrett.  The food was delicious, and midway through, an old guy with a greek guitar came by to seranade the tables.  I asked him how that think was tuned, and he just took it off and handed it to me.  I plucked around on it, and the table of older Greek women nearby clapped politely.  Then he took it back and seranaded the table of ladies who sang along with every song.

After dinner we went for my walking around.

and afterwards H went to bed and we all went back to the Mavros Gatos, where the young man pulled out my shirt and good times were had by all!  YEA.
