castles castles castles

woke up a bit later today after staying up so late last night, breakfast was sad at the hotel then we walked over to the harbour to see the deer on postss that are the symbol of the city.  afterwards we headed to old town, which is basically a fortified city inside a castle with a moat and gates and everything.  built by the Knights of St John, with an enourmous castle inside the castle, we wandered around for two hours and didn't see 1/4 of it.  the main problem with old town is that it is full of crap stores selling tourist crap, and also a ton of restaraunts begging people to come eat there.  we explored the moat the wall and the castle of the knights of St John, then had a lovely lunch at Indigo in the central market.

then we got in the car and drove to the highest point in town where a church had been built on top of an ancient temple of Athen.  the place also had a small for on the hill overlooking the town.  the unique thing about this hilltop sanctuary was that it was covered in Peacocks.  like hundreds.  and they were making strange noises and it was freaking me out.

then we hopped in the car and headed south on the western side of the island.  since this is the side facing Turkey, there are a couple of small, but impressive castles along the road.  our first stop however was ancient kamares, which was high on a hilltop, covering a large area over the side.  it was an amazing site from ariund 3 bc.

then we headed to the kastilla in Kastellos., which was also high on a hill.  this casle was neat to view from afar, but less so inside.

further down the road was the casle at Monolithos.  now this looked neat from outside, but inside the view was breathtaking.

we then backtracked back to town and got lost looking for a restaraunt in old town and went to a wonder place instead called Archodiko.  thefood was great and. we spent the evening talking to the owners son about all sorts of interesting things.

tommorrow east coast and maybe the southern tip.
