elafonisi? ya su

so we got moving late today, and waved goodbyeto chania, beautiful chania, headed out on the national highway, then i took thewrong exit, which we discovered way too late, and then in a move of sheer mcgyver, i took a tiny roD hoping it would save the day.  this road was the sizeof your average one car driveway, would through weeds that grabbed at the car from both sides, and when the paved road gave way to gravel, we thought we were sunk.  up the side of this mountain, with sheer drops on one side, down 1300 feetto the gorge below, up and up i drove, hoping that it lead to the promise land.  when the road looked liked it was going to end, i thought, there is no place to turn around, we are so screwed, and yet, on i went, and to iur suprise, over a the tip top of the mountain, the road suddenly plunged down the other side, and after another kilometer, the gravel turned back to pavement, and past a house and a barking dog, suddenly we were on the road we should have been on two hours before.

to make a long story short, we arrived at elafonisi beach around noon when it was starting to getpacked.  we walked across the sand pennisula to the small island on the other side and realized, we forgot to get cash in chania, which we needed in sougia.  so then back the way we came and a hard right towards another gorgeous coastal town of paleochora, which approached from the mountains above was simply breathtaking.
we found the atm, had a bite to eat before heading back.

Into themountains and further east to our final destination, Sougia, tiny coastal town with two roads, and aa beach that goes on forever.  we explored theanciet ruins of ancient soya,

butwere distracted by the idiot campers who had pitched a tent among the ruins, and all the white males dancing ariund nude on the. eastern beach, which i guess was allowed.  a lovely dinner later and now we rest up for our 9 mile hile of the samaria gorge tomorrow.
