myceanes or mikinnes

today was a very much anticipated trip as we drove out of navplion and headed north to the ancient site of myceanes.  on a hilltop in a remote part of the pelepones, this ancient civilization ruled the ancient world and was the home of agememnon at one time.  it was very cool to see the giant gates and the huge stones that supposedlythe cyclops put into place.  they were bigger than most rocks, let me tell you.  there were also a number of beehive burial chambers and some very neat stuff in the museum.  next to the site was the treasuryof atreus, which basically looked like the burial chambers at the other site.  we then drove around for a while looking for the ancient site of tyrinnes, but only found the damn and a burial site.  supposedly we drove right by it, so we may look for it again tomorrow on our way out of town.  then we came back to beautiful navplion and road the windy roaf up to the acronoplia, which is the lower of the two battlements on the hills above the city, and then up to the palamides itself, which is a giant fortress above the acronaplia, which some people walk up, something like 999 stairs, but which we simply drove to.  the views from the top were spectcular.  after that we had a simple lunch at one of the streetside cafes, and then took a boat out to the bortzi, which sits alone in the harbor and at ine tome was a prison.  it was a lot less stressful days than most, since we tried not to walk to much and the drives were half an hour or so away.  tommorrow we leave beautiful navplion and head to the ancient city of mystras near sparta and then the dirou caves which are down in the mani before driving up the coast to our hotel in kalamata.  working on pictures, you may need to go back to some of the other posts, i've been sprinkling them in.
