The gorge of dead

Today we both woke up super early with zero alarm.  Going to bed at 8 local will do that to you.  The breakfast buffet at the hotel was pretty good and full of old Germans. Tasty.  Then we hopped in the car for the east coast of Crete.
imagine the twistiest road ever, going along the side of cliffs with a shear drop on one side down to the sea.  now imagine that road with the crazy drivers as mentioned before, passing on hills, blind curves, and even through city squares.  as crazy as i am i am no match for the daredevil drivers of crete.  no way.
about two and a half hours later we arrive in the tiny town of zakros, big sister to kato zakros which is the destination of the day.  along the road to kato zakros is a small parking area where you can hop on the trail down to the gorge of dead, which eventually winds down to the beach of kato zakros.  the high mountainous walls loomed above us and a cute little stream followed us along, as well as a random goat.  up high on the walls were caves that we could not reach, but at one timed were tombs for minoan royalty.  as the gorge opened out into the clearing of kato zakros, the road then led us to the minoan palace of zakros.  it was built around 1600 bc and is still being dug out.  by the looks of the people we saw working on the site its going to be a while.  there were some very cool things uncovered but also a lot of modern concrete things which at times had us wondering if it was ancient or new.  the small bit about the palace in our crete guide book wasnt a whole lot of help.
after the ruins wehad dinner at a taverna set upright onthe beech.  i had my first shot of raki and some local lamb.  then we took a taxi backto our car.  there wasnt any way we could make it to gournia before they closed, vut we stopped off any ways to look at it through the fence.
tonight is our last in agios nikoloas, as tomorrow we go to the lepor colony island and lassithi pleateau and the cave where zues was hidden from his father when the mad titan was killing all of his sons.
